SUV from Senate bid used legally, Mandel saysPublished: 9/4/13 @ 12:00
Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel says his team followed all campaign finance laws regarding a vehicle from his 2012 U.S. Senate campaign that was still in use when it was involved in a March crash.
Mandel said at a Tuesday event that both the letter and the spirit of the law were followed.
The March crash, on I-75 near Toledo, came months after Mandel lost his bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.
Federal campaign finance law prohibited using the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee to campaign for another office or for personal purposes.
Mandel’s state treasurer campaign wrote a check renting the vehicle June 30, months after it was totaled. Mandel, a Republican, says he doesn’t know if an insurance claim was filed. No insurance settlement has been reported.
