COLUMBUS

Police say officers who witnessed a group rob a store shot and critically injured an armed suspect and arrested four more people.

Police say the confrontation happened Wednesday as officers were conducting surveillance on a group suspected in about a dozen robberies over three weeks.

The department says police following the group saw them rob employees of a store at gunpoint. Police say officers confronted the suspects as they returned to a vehicle, and a male suspect who got out with a handgun was shot by a 22-year-veteran assigned to the SWAT unit.

The injured suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The remaining four suspects were arrested without incident.

Police say the 23-year-old man, 30-year-old woman and three 17-year-old boys are charged with aggravated robbery.
