At the end of the 2012-2013 school year, Canfield Village Middle School students were given the opportunity to participate in the CVMS Summer Reading Program, with the possibility of earning rewards.
In order for participating students to be eligible for reading program rewards, they were required to enroll in the program, read books from the list on the Summer Reading website and blog on the site once every two weeks about the books they had read.
A team of 12 CVMS teachers, including Erica Putro, monitored the blogs to ensure the students posted evidence at least once every two weeks of their reading.
“We monitored the site and looked for the students to mention in their blogs specific details from the books they were reading to prove they had read the book,” Putro said.
The teachers’ hopes for the students’ summer reading included they read books which they enjoyed, the summer reading helped the students keep sharp skills which they had worked so hard to refine during the past school year and the students have fun and benefit from discussing the books with others.
Everyone who met the Summer Reading requirements received a reward of ice cream sundaes during their lunch period, which were provided by CVMS Principal Traci Hostetler. The top three students who posted in their blogs most frequently received Barnes and Noble gift cards. First place winner, Julia Petrallo, received a $50 card and second and third place winners Meghan Finnerty and Hannah Barone received $25 gift cards. The gift cards were provided by an anonymous donor.
