The Boardman High School girls soccer teams played in their fourth annual breast cancer game on Sept. 28 at Boardman High School.

The junior varsity team lost to Green High School 0-1, and the varsity team tied Green 1-1. But the day was about much more than the score.

Boardman girls played in honor or in memory of someone who has been affected by breast cancer. The girls were given sashes with the name of their honoree across them and wore these during the game.

Proceeds from the game were donated to the Joanie Abdu Breast Cancer Center. In the past four years, the Boardman High School girls soccer team’s breast cancer games has raised more than $6,000 for the center.

Dr. Rashid Abdu praised the girls’ efforts.

“I can’t say enough how exhilarating it is to see the kids work so hard to help people they don’t even know,” said Abdu. “They are an excellent example of what community service looks like.” Abdu said the money will benefit Joanie’s Promise. Joanie’s Promise is a program that provides free breast care services to uninsured and underinsured women who meet financial eligibility requirements.

Breast-care services provided include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), molecular breast imaging (MBI) and image-guided breast biopsy. In addition, Joanie’s Promise pays hospital and radiologist fees.

Sponsors for the game were Panera, Starbucks, Cinema South and Bloomin’ Crazy Florist.
