1446: The Korean alphabet, created under the aegis of King Sejong, is first published.

1776: A group of Spanish missionaries settle in present-day San Francisco.

1813: Giuseppe Verdi, the composer of such classic operas as “Aida,” “La Traviata,” “Rigoletto” and “Il Trovatore,” is born in the Italian village of Le Roncole. (There is some dispute over Verdi’s date of birth, with numerous sources saying he was actually born on Oct. 10.)

1888: The public is first admitted to the Washington Monument.

1910: A coal dust explosion at the Starkville Mine in Colorado leaves 56 miners dead.

1930: Laura Ingalls becomes the first woman to fly across the United States as she completes a nine-stop journey from Roosevelt Field, N.Y., to Glendale, Calif.

1936: The first generator at Boulder (later Hoover) Dam begins transmitting electricity to Los Angeles.

1940: Rock and roll legend John Lennon of The Beatles is born in Liverpool, England.

1958: Pope Pius XII dies at age 82, ending a 19-year papacy. (He is succeeded by Pope John XXIII.)

1962: Uganda wins autonomy from British rule.

1974: Businessman Oskar Schindler, credited with saving about 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust, dies in Frankfurt, West Germany.

1987: Author, politician and diplomat Clare Boothe Luce dies in Washington at age 84.

2003: A suicide car bombing at a Baghdad police station kills eight people; Spanish military attache Jose Antonio Bernal Gomez was shot to death in Baghdad.

2008: Calm gives way to fear in financial markets, turning a relatively steady day into a rout that pushes the Dow Jones industrials below 9,000 — to 8,579.19 — for the first time in five years.

2012: Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison following his July conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.

1988: Mike Parteleno, 31, of Struthers, who once weighed more than 1,000 pounds, has shed 400 pounds at Dick Gregory’s weight loss clinic in Philadelphia and has been on the talk show beat from New York to Tokyo.

A program to lighten the load on Hubbard city streets has resulted in the drivers of overweight trucks being fined $5,000 over two weeks.

1973: Jack D. Funk of Lancaster, Texas, is killed when his private plane gets lost in the fog and crashes in a cornfield near Columbiana.

1963: Spokesmen for Catholic, Protestant and Jewish groups in Youngstown have all endorsed the proposed 3-mill levy for school purposes.

A group of members of the Mahoning Presbytery of United Presbyterian Church recommend that the presbytery take a strong, positive stand on civil rights.

Three men questioned in Youngstown’s gang slayings, among them Ronald Carabbia and Philip “Fleagle” Mainer, are indicted by a federal grand jury on tax evasion charges.

1938: Isaly Dairy Co. will spend $400,000 on a new plant that will be built at the Mahoning Avenue viaduct.

A throng of 62,500, the day’s biggest, sees the Southern California Trojans knock Ohio State from the ranks of the undefeated, 14 to 7.

Five hundred Youngs-town Camp Fire girls, dressed in all the gaudy colors of real Gypsies, hold a Gypsy party in Mill Creek Park.
