Murder charge dismissed in 2012 Ashtabula shooting involving Youngstown man
ASHTABULA — A murder charge in connection with a 2012 homicide involving a Youngstown man has been dismissed after the Ashtabula County grand jury returned a no bill on the charge.
Taquan Mathers, 20, of Ashtabula, was indicted on an aggravated murder with a gun specification charge for the Sept. 30 shooting death of 22-year-old Dawaun Davis of Youngstown, chief Assistant Prosecutor Harold Specht said.
“The grand jury ruled it self-defense,” he said.
Police have said more than 20 bullets and other evidence were retrieved from 918 W. 37th St., where Davis was fatally shot in the neck during a shoot out.
Police believe the incident started at about 6 p.m. in front of the West 37th Street home, and it escalated into a violent fight with gunshots being fired, according to police reports.
When police arrived on the scene, they found Davis on the ground with a fatal gunshot wound. Neighbors stood outside as several police cars and ambulances arrived on the scene.
Mathers fled the scene but didn’t get far because he suffered bullet wounds in his leg and buttocks. He was taken to a Cleveland hospital, where he was treated.
