Published: Sun, October 6, 2013 @ 1:02 p.m.

SALEM

The Salem Historical Society will present “The Road to Freedom, African-Americans in the Civil War,” at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dale Shaffer Library meeting room, 239 S. Lundy Ave.

The presentation describes what blacks, both men and women, did to support the Civil War as spies, scouts, nurses, journalists, teachers and soldiers in the battlefield and on the homefront.

Paula Gidjunis, an instructor at the Civil War Institute at Manor College, is the presenter. She has worked to open a museum in LaMott, Pa., to honor black soldiers who fought during the Civil War.

Greeter is Carolyn Alesi, and Kevin Shafer and David Shivers will provide refreshments.

Parking in the city municipal lot is encouraged. For information call the museum at 330-337-8514.
