1861: During the Civil War, the Confederate navy captures the Union steamer Fanny in North Carolina’s Pamlico Sound.

1908: Henry Ford introduces his Model T automobile to the market.

1910: The offices of the Los Angeles Times are destroyed by a bomb explosion and fire; 21 Times employees are killed.

1932: Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees makes his supposed called shot, hitting a home run against Chicago’s Charlie Root in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the World Series, won by the New York Yankees 7-5 at Wrigley Field.

1936: Gen. Francisco Franco is proclaimed the head of an insurgent Spanish state.

1937: Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black delivers a radio address in which he acknowledges being a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, but said he had dropped out of the organization before becoming a U.S. senator.

1940: The first section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, 160 miles in length, opens to the public.

1949: Mao Zedong proclaims the People’s Republic of China during a ceremony in Beijing. A 42-day strike by the United Steelworkers of America begins over retirement benefits.

1961: Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hits his 61st home run during a 162-game season, compared with Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs during a 154-game season.

1988: Youngstown State University Trustee Richard P. McLaughlin objects to a 23 percent increase in the athletic fund that was inserted into the budget by the finance and budget committee.

Trumbull County Risk Manager Carl Bispeck receives a $140,000 check from the county to settle his legal claim against county commissioners who had abolished his job.

Wean Inc.’s stock jumps 27 percent, from $1.87 to $2.37 a share, over five days of trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

1973: A club wielding young North Side man is shot and wounded in the leg by one of two Youngstown policemen who chased him into a driveway at the rear of St. Columbia Cathedral after they were called to investigate a report of someone tampering with a parked truck in N. Phelps Street.

The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Stephen W. Begalla, 77, who retired in 1968 after 50 years as a Youngstown priest, dies at his home in Hollywood, Fla.

Army Spec. 4 Jack Reali, 24, of Lowellville, who is being questioned in Pittsburgh in connection with two murders, has told police he has killed six people over a period of 34 months.

1963: The Rt. Rev. John C. Sidney, bishop of Korea, tells 125 vestrymen and clergy at the annual regional vestrymen’s meeting at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Youngstown, that “a revolution is needed in the Christian church to meet the urgent need of mankind.”

The Shippingport ferry, loaded with passengers and 10 cars, sinks in the Ohio River near Midland, Pa., after being struck by a tow boat in heavy fog. One person is reported missing.

The drought continues as precipitation at the Youngstown Municipal Airport for September showed a deficiency of 1.95 inches, bringing the year’s deficiency to l2.23 inches.

1938: Eleven motorists are arrested for driving without new 1938-39 licenses as city police begin a campaign against thousands of Mahoning County motorists who are without new credentials.

Joan Doretta Spencer, 3 months old, is recovering in the bronchoscopic clinic of South Side Hospital after removal of an open safety pin from her throat.

Albert Bonamase, 27-year-old tire salesman, who was stabbed by an unknown man in front of his Adams Street home, dies in St. Elizabeth Hospital before detectives were able to learn anything from him about his assailant.
