YSU football team misses playoffs

Published: Sun, November 24, 2013 @ 11:50 a.m.

The Youngstown State football team missed out on a FCS playoff berth Sunday.

The Penguins (8-4, 5-3 Missouri Valley) entered Selection Sunday on the bubble due to losing their last three games, including a 42-13 defeat to South Dakota State on Saturday. They have not made the postseason since 2006.

Sad to see YSU relegated to being a non entity in FCS Football. Heck, even a team with a sub .500 record made it in. Changes need to be made or the 150 people in the stands at the end of the last game will become the standard

Few echoes reverberate as painfully in a community's soul as the sound of a shibboleth being shattered.

Another coaching meltdown for Wolful, I mean Wolford. Team got what they deserved. Head coach has got to go! The performance yesterday was embarrassing. Thank Goodness only about 1000 fans witnessed it. Where does YSU get off stating the crowd was 8500? Sounds like Obama spin. Couldn't have been more than 1300 tops there. Come on, YSU, what was the actual turnstile attendance. I drove by in the second quarter to gauge the attendance. If there was 8500 there, as YSU stated, 7000 of them must have been in the restrooms!

pwhite--the attendance is paid attendance, not butts in the seats which is what everybody uses. And YOU are part of the problem. For crissakes, if you took the time to DRIVE BY, why didn't you take the time to go to the game? Typical Youngstown whiner. Probably had to go home to watch Notre Dame.

And you're right IF they had time to drive by .... should have went in. ...... must be a "fairy weather fan" who tailgates and finds budds with free beer to leach off of ...... oh well we all have to be something........

I have nothing against Wolford. This is about results.
If the university's goal is to have the Penguins competing for a national championship on a regular basis, then Wolford is not getting it done. So the school has to decide how important football is. If it's vitally important, then they have the resources to make it happen, and it's time for a new coach. If they keep him, then they will be making a statement as to the importance of football, whether that's their intention or not.

You were Close, badeeepster! I actually I went home to watch OSU, a real championship contender in a true sold out stadium. Also had time to catch some Steeler Super Bowl highlights while YSU went belly up.

To Hmm, glad you attend every game, you must thrive on pain and misery. Drag the family to see it too, I'm sure a great time was had by all! Did you stay for the final buzzer, or check out early? I thought I saw you there, you must have been the one YSU fan on the visitor's side of the stadium. Haha.

Those who pick the playoff teams showed what they think of YSU's annual nose dive under Coach Wolfull. Couldn't beat out sub .500 teams to qualify for the playoffs. YSU has a good SOS (strength of schedule for those of you from the north side). Problem is SOS only matters if you WIN against superior opponents.

YSU couldn't give tickets away to the game, literally heard the ads on the radio all week offering free tickets. Tressel didn't have to promote his teams. The performance spoke for itself. And YSU is capable of providing actual turnstile attendance, they choose not to. Do you have any idea WHY that might be? Answer: they can't provide an accurate turnstile count of people in attendance because they don't want make fools of themselves. Didn't even come close to selling out the North Dakota State game.

Sounds similar to Obama's health care sign ups. Projection 600,000 in the first month, 46,033 actually enrolled. Smoke and mirrors. They are both pulling from the same play book. Bring back Jim!

O$U a contender--don't think so. Their schedule is a yearly joke. You live in Youngstown? And root for teams in Columbu$ and Pittsburgh. And work Obama in your equation. Typical miserable Republican

Every season under Wolford, YSU does NOT get better as the season progresses. Every year, November has been a killer. You have to finish the season strong by eliminating your mistakes and maximizing the strengths of your players. But, Wolford has not done this and for that reason alone he should be canned. Next, what ever happened with recruiting the State of Youngstown like Tressel. You need a large base of kids from the 75 mile radius of Y-town so that their families will put their butts in the seats. And, defense wins championships. If you hold them scoreless, it is a tie! But, their linemen on both sides of the ball are weak and slow. This is a very lackluster program.

Badeepster, you find fault in someone rooting for a team from Columbus called Ohio State? Lol, you do know that is the main college in our home state, right? Heaven forbid someone actually wants to watch a college football program that actually strives to be a contender. How can you even compare OSU to YSU? Just because YOU want to watch a perennial loser, whose program obviously doesn't care about doing what it takes to put a winning team on the field, doesn't mean other Ohioans want to wallow in your own misery. Give it up, YSU hasn't been a contender in nearly 2 DECADES
