Top prep soccer players named in district
Paige Bidinotto of Canfield and Juliana Vazquez of Cardinal Mooney were among the soccer Players of the Year for the Youngstown District as voted by district coaches. Bidinotto won girls Division II honors and Vazquez was named in girls Division III. The girls Division I player of the year was Jenna Dorchock of Howland.
On the boys side, top players were Kyle Watson of Howland in D1, Matt Pasternak of Lakeview in D2 and Greg Bable of Crestview in Division III.
Coaches of the year included Phil Simone of Canfield, Matt Thomas of West Branch, Joe Megyesi of Howland, Tilden Tatebe of Warren Harding, Raymond O’Flaherty of United and Justin Deraway of Badger.
Scrappers GM gains additional duties
Mahoning Valley Scrappers general manager Jordan Taylor has been promoted by the club’s ownership group. HWS Baseball named Taylor its Vice President-HWS Baseball effective immediately. Taylor will continue his duties as general manager of the Scrappers and will increase involvement in the other teams owned by HWS Baseball, the organization announced Wednesday.
HWS Baseball owns and operates four baseball franchises. In addition to the Scrappers, the HWS family includes the Mobile BayBears (Class AA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks), Modesto Nuts (Class A, Colorado Rockies, and the Columbia Blowfish (Summer Collegiate Coastal Plain League).
Vonn partially tears repaired knee ligament
Lindsey Vonn partially tore one of the reconstructed ligaments in her surgically repaired right knee in a training crash that at the very least puts her preparation for the Sochi Olympics in February on hold. Vonn, 29, has not competed since needing surgery to fix her ACL and MCL after the crash in Austria nine months ago; the ACL was re-injured Tuesday. Vonn is a four-time overall World Cup champion and 2010 Vancouver downhill gold medalist.
Uruguay earns 32nd, final World Cup berth
Uruguay claimed the 32nd and final berth at next year’s World Cup, tying Jordan 0-0 Wednesday night for a 5-0 aggregate win in the South American-Asian playoff. Uruguay will be among the eight seeded teams for the draw on Dec. 6 along with host Brazil, defending champion Spain, Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Germany and Switzerland.
Other nations that have qualified: Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, United States, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, England, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Chile, Ecuador, Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria.
Indians, Pirates make adjustments to rosters
The Pittsburgh Pirates have added four players to the 40-man roster, including highly touted outfield prospect Gregory Polanco. The Pirates also placed infielder Alen Hanson, left-handed starter Joely Rodriguez and right-handed starter Casey Sadler on the 40-man Wednesday. Pittsburgh also agreed to terms with right-handers Collin Balester, Jake Brigham, Jay Jackson, Josh Kinney and Seth McClung on minor league contracts.
The Cleveland Indians also added five players to their 40-man roster: RHP Bryan Price, RHP Austin Adams, 1B Jesus Aguilar, OF Carlos Moncrief and INF Erik Gonzalez. The team designated for assignment infielder Cord Phelps.
Tigers, Texas to swap Fielder for Kinsler
A person with knowledge of the deal says the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers have agreed to a blockbuster trade that would send slugger Prince Fielder to the Rangers for second baseman Ian Kinsler. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because no announcement had been made. The deal was first reported by CBSSports.com.
