Pot plants found in home during fire
Firefighters found more than 100 marijuana plants while battling a vacant house fire early Thursday on the North Side.
Fire crews were called about 6:30 a.m. to a vacant 575 Redondo Road home and found the plants on the second floor. They then called the vice squad at the police department.
Lt. Gerald Slattery, head of the vice squad, said he is not sure yet of the estimated value of the plants because they are of varying sizes and need to be weighed before that can be determined.
Slattery said he has seen bigger grow operations before, but the one discovered Thursday was a sophisticated one. He said the plants had a good ventilation system and a good lighting system. The home was vacant and someone was stealing electricity and water to keep the operation up, Slattery said.
He said an investigation is ongoing to find out who the plants belonged to.
