Prosecutor asks for lighter sentence in Ohio hospital shooting

Published: Thu, November 14, 2013 @ 9:30 a.m.

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A prosecutor says she’ll seek a lesser sentence for an Ohio man convicted of fatally shooting his ailing wife in her hospital bed.

Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said she’ll file a motion asking that 68-year-old John Wise be sentenced for the lesser crime of manslaughter, which would greatly reduce his prison time.

If accepted by the judge, Wise would be sentenced to six years.

He was convicted last week of aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault, which carries a mandatory punishment of life in prison. He had pleaded insanity, claiming he couldn’t stand to see his wife in pain in the hospital.

In a statement, Walsh said that because of the “unique” circumstances of the case, “a shorter prison sentence is just.”

He will be sentenced Monday.
