Accounting seminar

CANFIELD

The Mahoning Valley Accounting Society sponsors an accounting and auditing update seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St.

The seminar qualifies for eight hours of accounting and auditing continuing professional education.

The cost is $139 for members and $169 for nonmembers, which includes lunch. For information, call Jack Vacca at 330-533-1700.

FirstEnergy revenue

AKRON

FirstEnergy’s third-quarter net income dropped to $218 million, or 52 cents per share, the company said Tuesday.

Total revenue was $4 billion for the quarter. That’s nearly half of what it was in the third quarter of 2012, when the company reported net income of $425 million, or $1.02 per share on revenue of $4.1 billion.

FirstEnergy said higher operating costs, increased depreciation and interest expenses and declining power deliveries weighed down net income.

Consumers revenue

minerva

Consumers Bancorp, the holding company of Consumer’s National Bank, on Tuesday reported third-quarter net income of $621,000, or 24 cents per share.

The company’s income increased by 1 percent, or $6,000 from the same time a year ago.

Total assets were up, and a decline in some of the bank’s expenses helped its bottom line, officials said.

Market stalls

NEW YORK

The stock market is taking a break from its record-breaking run. Some weak corporate earnings reports Tuesday held the market back, pushing the major indexes slightly lower. The market is still close to record levels after a surge that has put the Standard & Poor’s 500 index on track for its best performance since 2009.
