Campbell police believe they know who one of their officers was chasing when he wrecked his cruiser on the Madison Avenue Expressway in Youngstown.
They are not ready to release the person’s name, but they believe he has a warrant for arrest on a second-degree felony charge, said Campbell Detective Sgt. John Rusnak.
“We think that’s why he ran,” Rusnak said Saturday.
The accident occurred at 11:20 p.m. Friday as K9 Officer Eric Manning was pursuing a vehicle on U.S. Route 422 west after he saw the driver commit a traffic offense, Rusnak said.
Manning was on a special detail patrolling for drug activity at the time.
Rusnak said that after the cars turned onto the expressway, Manning lost control and hit the road divider on the wet pavement.
Rusnak said he does not know how fast the cruiser was going. The road was wet, he said.
“We don’t believe it was any wrongdoing on the part of the officer,” he said.
Manning was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center, and the department’s dog, Storm, was taken to a veterinarian, Rusnak said. Both are fine.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
