Grace United Methodist Church, 1725 Drexel NW, will mark the 110th anniversary of its founding at a service at 9:45 a.m. Nov. 10 led by Pastor Glenn Hamilton.
Music will be provided by the Chancel Choir directed by Savontae Diggs, music director. Accompanists will be Donna Bock, organ; Sharilene Drescher, piano; and Pastor Hamilton, drums/percussion.
Church memorabilia will be displayed in the parlor.
A potluck dinner will be at noon in fellowship hall. A slide show of church history and pictures from past to the present will be displayed.
Grace UMC came into existence in response to an order given during the September 1902 conference of the Evangelical Churches in Ohio. It was a mission.
The church building was dedicated Nov. 22, 1903. The church became self-supporting in 1920. It was named Grace UMC in 1968.
In 1946, a building site at the corner of Drexel and Moncrest was bought and construction begun. The panel at the entrance to the sanctuary symbolizes the grace of God, for which the church is named. In 1977, the education unit was expanded.
In 1994, the after-school Bible Club was started. Other outreaches include the food pantry, annual Concert on the Lawn events, Cortland Community Band Christmas Concert, Make a Difference Day projects, Trunk and Treat and Operation Christmas Child. Other groups are Bible study, quilters, knitters, Prayer Shawl Ministry, youth group and Carpenter’s 2x4 Team that visits nursing homes or are home-bound.
