Marcellus group names new president

The Marcellus Shale Coalition picked its second president to represent the high-profile group of companies that are active in Pennsylvania’s booming natural-gas industry.

David Spigelmyer, a former Chesapeake Energy executive and Marcellus Shale Coalition chairman, was tapped by the executive board of the approximately 300-member coalition.

The coalition formed in 2008 as interest began spreading in the Marcellus Shale, which lies deep underneath parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and New York and is thought by geologists to be the nation’s largest- known natural-gas reservoir. The group includes Chevron, Shell and Range Resources.

Anti-fracking bills

The Colorado Oil and Gas Association is spending heavily to defeat four anti-fracking measures pending on municipal ballots across northern Colorado.

Drilling supporters have spent more than $600,000 to oppose groups attempting to limit drilling in Fort Collins, Boulder, Lafayette and Broomfield.

That’s nearly 40 times more than the opposition groups have raised. Drilling is relatively rare in the counties where the initiatives are based.

Drilling near national park

North Dakota regulators have approved a plan that will allow a company to drill for oil near Theodore Roosevelt National Park after resubmitting an application that moves its operation away from the historic Elkhorn Ranch where Theodore Roosevelt built a cabin in the early 1880s.

ExxonMobile Corp., subsidiary XTO Energy Inc., had staked a well within 300 feet of the ranch. XTO withdrew that proposal in March after public opposition and submitted a new application. The North Dakota Industrial Commission met in October and approved a permit for that alternative.
