A seesaw contest characterized by tough defensive play, mistakes, penalties and thrilling break away scoring runs ended with the Falcons on top of the 100 pound division of the Y.A.C. League Oct. 27 against the Howland Little Tigers. The Falcons finally prevailed in overtime 20-14 to complete the championship season with a 9-1 record. The title was the Falcons first at the 100 pound level since 2002 and it was earned by winning five games in a row since a two point loss to Boardman on Sept. 22.
The final victory would not be easy. Both teams committed multiple mistakes as the first quarter concluded deadlocked at 0-0. Howland broke the ice early in the second quarter with a 40-yard break away run plus a conversion to take the lead 8-0. Falcons answered before halftime with a 70-yard break away run of their own as Terrance Pankey outraced several Tigers to pay dirt. Reuben Traylor Jr. added the conversion and the game was knotted at 8-8 as the first half came to an end.
The Tigers then scored on another long run to take a 14-8 lead, but the Falcons stopped the extra point try on a great tackle by Aiden St. Clair and Howland led by six points entering the fourth quarter. Cameron Smith scored on a short touchdown run with 4:06 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the conversion attempt was no good, so the score remained tied at 14. Tough Falcon defense resulted in a fumble recovery by Smith and the team drove to the Tiger four yard line, but could not score and the game was still tied at the end of regulation play.
The Falcons started with the ball and took the lead on a 3-yard scamper by Pankey on a fourth down and goal play. The conversion was no good and Howland had their chance trailing by six. A third down tying touchdown by the Tigers was nullified by a procedure penalty and then the Falcon defense stiffened to turn the Tigers away on two huge plays. Pankey and Davion Pritchard combined to stop the Howland running back on fourth down, stopping the runner and ending the threat at the two yard line. The Falcons get the title, earning it the hard way 20-14 in over time.
