Canfield duo learns district tennis foes


The Canfield doubles team of Nick Debiec and William Brown will face Tanner Banning and Brendan Bauck of Kenston in the opening round of the Division I district meet at Oberlin College. First-round and quarterfinal matches will be played Thursday with action to resume on Saturday. The top six finishers will advance to the state tournament.

Debiec and Brown finished second in the sectional meet at Canton. Banning and Bauck were third-place finishers in the Solon sectional.

Also in the Canfield duo’s bracket are Connor Michelich and Cal Craven of Westlake, winners of the sectional at Oberlin, and Mike Wolowiecki and Dominic Polifrone of Hudson who finished fourth in the Medina sectional.

Fowler racer, 12, wins Econo Mods at Sharon


Jacob Euker became the youngest feature race winner in the 84-year history of Sharon Speedway on Saturday, capturing the HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods division feature race. The 12-year-old Fowler resident won the 15-lap race, just his sixth career start at Sharon after dominating competition in 2012 at Deerfield Raceway.

Other feature winners were Dave Murdick in the Governor Insurance DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Will Thomas III in the Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Bob Diver in the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Bob Sloss in the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars and Travis Creech in the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks.

Diver, 43, of Canfield posted just his second career win at the track. Creech, 25, earned his first career win in the 12-lap Mini Stocks feature.

Byron Nelson title first on tour for S. Korean


Sang-Moon Bae won the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, beating Keegan Bradley by two strokes after blowing a four-stroke lead. The 26-year-old South Korean closed with a 1-under 69 to finish at 13-under 267. Bradley set the TPC Four Seasons course record with an opening 60, but finished with a 72 on a day with wind gusting to near 40 mph at times. Bae has 11 international victories — winning on the Korea, Japan and Asian tours.

McDowell wins World Match Play event

KAVARNA, Bulgaria

Graeme McDowell won the Volvo World Match Play Championship, beating Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee 2 and 1 in the final at Thracian Cliffs. In the morning semifinals, McDowell beat South Africa’s Branden Grace 3 and 2, and Thongchai defeated South Africa’s Thomas Aiken 3 and 2.

Johnson gets first LPGA win at Mobile


Jennifer Johnson rallied to win the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic for her first tour title, birdieing four of the final six holes for a one-stroke victory over Jessica Korda and Pornanong Phatlum. The 21-year-old American closed with her second straight 7-under 65 for a tournament-record 21-under 267 total on The Crossings course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Magnolia Grove complex. But Phatlum was already done and the lead was safe even with Korda’s closing birdie. Phatlum, a 23-year-old from Thailand, closed with a 63. Korda finished with a 68 that included three bogeys and seven birdies.

Kenyan runners win Cleveland Marathon


Kenyan Philemon Terer has won the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 37 seconds. Another Kenyan, Sarah Kiptoo, won Sunday’s women’s race in 2:33:42.

Brandon Bauer of New Albany was the top Ohio finisher. He finished in fifth place in 2:28:45.

The race was held under tightened security in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.
