YSU baseball falls

valparaiso, ind.

The Youngstown State baseball team stranded 11 runners and dropped a 4-1 decision to Valparaiso on Thursday.

The Penguins will play in the first game of next week’s Horizon League Tournament at Eastwood Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

YSU had 10 hits in the first four innings, but it only had one run.

Penguins starter Patrick O’Brien retired 10 of the first 11 Crusader batters before allowing a run in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Mike Accardi, Drew Dosch and Neil Schroth all had two hits each for YSU.

Fitch’s Gerberry signs with Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE

Austintown Fitch High graduate Dan Gerberry signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday.

Gerberry, a center, spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

He was in Detroit’s training camp last summer before being released after the final preseason game.

Correction

Cardinal Mooney’s Carly Shutrump won the high jump, clearing 4-8, in the recent Diocesan Track and Field Meet.

Another competitor was incorrectly listed as the winner of the event in the Sunday, May 5 edition of The Vindicator.

Ex-NASCAR driver Dick Trickle dead at 71

CONCORD, N.C.

Dick Trickle, a former NASCAR driver whose larger-than-life personality and penchant for fun won him legions of fans despite a lack of success beyond the nation’s small tracks, died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. He was 71.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said authorities received a call believed to be from Trickle, who said “there would be a dead body and it would be his.” Authorities tried to call the number back, but no one answered.

Trickle’s body was found near his pickup truck at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boger City, N.C.

Stolen trailer leads to Truck Series feud

CONCORD, N.C.

A missing trailer has sparked a feud in NASCAR’s Truck Series.

Jennifer Jo Cobb said she feels “in danger” of racing today night at Charlotte Motor Speedway against another NASCAR driver who was arrested for allegedly stealing her team trailer last weekend.

Cobb said the trailer and its contents, valued at $279,000, were taken from her shop.

Fellow NASCAR driver Mike Harmon said he turned himself on Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of felony larceny and breaking and entering.

Flying B Golf Course has hole-in-one contest

SALEM

Flying B Golf Course, 13223 Middletown Rd., will host a $1 million hole-in-one contest on Saturday.

Golfers should call the course at 330-337-8138 to arrange a tee time to play 18 holes on Saturday.

On No. 16, tee shots will be marked closest to the pin.

The golfer who winds up closest at the close of play will receive a call in the evening after play concludes.

That golfer will then return to the course for one shot at a hole-in-one for $1 million.

Golfers are invited to participate as single players or in groups. Tee times are available all day Saturday.

Sharon Speedway looks to complete its fifth straight week of racing action on Trumbull County Business College Night on Saturday at 7 p.m.
