BOARDMAN

You’ve seen them compete nationally on ESPN and tomorrow you’ll have the opportunity to witness local amateurs in their quest to qualify for upcoming national strongman competitions.

The North American Strongman Sanctioned Contest, hosted by Shawn and Brandy Schumaker, owners of Team BSS Training and Fitness Center, will include five challenging events with all proceeds earmarked for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

“Cancer has affected most everyone’s family in some way, shape or form, including both of our families. Holding this competition is just our way of helping out such a worthy cause,” Brandy noted. “In addition, members from both of our families, as well as our extended Team BSS family will also take part in the Springfield Relay For Life, which takes place June 14-15 at Welker Park.”

The Schumaker’s are no strangers to the fitness and wellness field, having competed in multiple body building events while hosting several fitness warrior competitions at their former New Middletown gym.

Their new CrossFit training facility, located at 1221 W. Reserve Rd., includes six personal trainers and daily group classes which keep participants motivated through vigorous training sessions, all the while providing a safe, fun and effective method of fitness tailored to their own needs.

“While this is our first strongman event, the experience that we have gained by hosting fitness warrior events has been invaluable. Fitness warrior event challenges are a hybrid of mini-power lifting, strongman and CrossFit competitions. Strongman competitions are exactly what the name implies,” Shawn added.

Saturday’s competition, which is expected to attract nearly 50 male and female contestants, will feature an axle clean and press for reps; a yoke/keg relay for time; 10 tire flips for time; dead lift log medley and stone over 48 inches bar total reps.

“We have a 320 pound yoke and 100 pound keg and that goes up to 750 pounds with the yoke and a 275-pound sandbag, simply because we could not find a keg that weighed that much,” Shawn stated. “The tires range from 400-950 pounds while the log is 115-275 pounds so there is definitely a challenge to perform at high peak on Saturday.”

“The axle clean will begin with 105 pounds for the women and start at 265 pounds for the men,” Brandy added. “Reps are the tell-all in that event.”

In order to qualify for national competition there must be at least five contestants in a weight class with the winner then becoming eligible to advance.

The Schumaker’s event is sanctioned by the North American Strongman Corporation with pre-registration already attracting competitors from New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia and throughout the state of Ohio.

“Our theme is ‘Lifting Boulders for Boulders’ and we are very excited to get the competition underway. We really do not know how big the event will be, but if pre-registration is any indication then we are on the right track,” Shawn said. “We’re hoping the weather cooperates with our goal remaining to qualify as many contestants as possible for national strongman competition.”

Team BSS Fitness is an abbreviation of the gym’s motto, ‘We work together as a Team Because Support Strengthens!

“Strength training is one of the only activities in life where the ability to push yourself to failure is the ultimate success,” Brandy added.
