Mooney grad Reese NCAC’s top player
Cardinal Mooney High graduate and Wooster junior second baseman Eddie Reese was named Player of the Year in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Reese, who made his second-straight appearance on the All-NCAC first team, owns a .365 batting average (58-of-159) and leads the league in slugging percentage (.686), runs batted in (51), doubles (19), home runs (8), total bases (109) and walks (29).
Reese helped guide the Fighting Scots to the 2013 NCAC baseball title with a 3-0 record at the 2013 NCAC baseball tournament and will look to keep the momentum going into the NCAA Terre Haute Regional which will be contested this week.
Caitlin Cina hit a RBI triple for the Boardman High softball team in Tuesday’s 9-6 tournament over Howland. A story in Wednesday’s edition incorrectly credited her twin sister Courtney with the hit.
NAC adds Newbury
The Northeastern Athletic Conference has voted to admit Newbury beginning with the 2014-15 school year.
Newbury will be the 12th member of the conference. Windham begins league affiliation this fall.
Russo helps Bulls win NAHL cup
The Amarillo Bulls defeated the Wenatchee Wild, 5-0, to win the North American Hickey League’s Robertson Cup. Canfield High graduate Rocky Russo is an assistant coach and assistant director of hockey operations for the Bulls.
The Mahoning Valley Phantoms were a member of the NAHL through the 2008-09 season. Russo was an assistant with the Phantoms before becoming an assistant coach and director of scouting for the NAHL’s St. Louis Bandits.
A Kent State University graduate, Russo was Youngstown State’s head coach when the Penguins had a club hockey team.
Harness racing set in Canfield
The Canfield Harness Horsemen’s Association will present a harness racing matinee on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
The event allows young horses to race in an exercise/training mile and allow the public to see how horses are prepared for a race.
In harness racing, matinee means no wagering.
Gates will open at 9 a.m.
Strongman competiton set
A North American Strongman Sanctioned Contest is set Saturday at Team BSS, 1221 W. Western Reserve Road.
Events will include axle clean and press, deadlift/log medley, atlas stone, yoke/keg carry and tire flip.

Challenger Baseball will conduct a benefit auction on Saturday at 1 p.m. at 8292 Tod Ave.

Ravens’ McClain retires
OWINGS MILLS, Md.
Linebacker Rolando McClain has told the Baltimore Ravens that he’s retiring from the NFL.
The 23-year-old McClain played three seasons with the Oakland Raiders before signing a one-year contract with Baltimore as a free agent on April 12.
“Rolando let me know that he plans to retire from the NFL,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. “We have placed him on the Reserve/Retired list.”
Ten days after signing with the Ravens, McClain was arrested in Decatur, Alabama, and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
