Cincy looking for new police chief

Published: Tue, May 14, 2013 @ 1:45 p.m.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati is set to begin a nationwide search for a new police chief Wednesday.

That comes after the city’s current chief announced that he’s leaving for Detroit after two years on the job in Cincinnati, where the department is bracing for layoffs.

Chief James Craig’s resignation takes effect June 22. He is Cincinnati’s first black police chief and the first to be hired from outside the department.

City Manager Milton Dohoney Jr. says the search for Craig’s replacement will begin immediately and could take most of the summer.

Dohoney says the top goal will be to find a chief that will lead the department to continue to reduce crime in Cincinnati. The city saw a 15 percent drop in violent crime between 2010 and last year.
