Drilling forces restrictions on recreation at national forest, park in Ohio

Associated Press

Recreational activities are being restricted at Wayne National Forest as oil and gas drilling proceeds and coal mining is explored at the southeastern Ohio park.

A spokesman says an order signed April 30 is intended to protect both the park’s natural resources and visitors.

The prohibitions affect campfires, off-highway vehicle operation, camping, hunting, boating and other activities.

Rules limit campers to staying 14 days within any 30-day period and prohibit mass camping involving more than eight people and three camping units at a site. New restrictions also apply to alcohol, drugs, public nudity and fireworks.

A complete list is available at the park’s website.

A public comment period is under way on proposed coal mining at the park. Shale drilling began there last year.

Finally, what our parks are REALLY for!

Gas companies have been waiting and lobbying our illustrious republican governor and staff to take our rights away from enjoying the parks that we pay for, so that they can destroy hundreds of acres of pristine forest and contaminate park lakes. This is total madness! To top it all off, this gas is being sent to Asia because gas prices are 'too soft' in the USA. After we were told that this gas would make us more energy independent and lower the prices of this resource, the gas companies ship it to Asia in order to keep our gas prices up.

What a corrupt and arrogant pr*** this Lehman Bros governor is! I say the state of Ohio declare a tax holiday for all its residents (both income and sales taxes) statewide during the entire time that the beautiful Nelsonville area and Wayne National Forest is being raped by gas drillers. Afterall, they are entitled to make a fortune off of land that we own, without any respect given to the environment or the people who enjoy using these parks in the manner they are accustomed to.

I'm so tired of the 'anything goes to make a buck' philosophy of the republican party.
