Drilling forces restrictions on recreation at national forest, park in Ohio

Associated Press

NELSONVILLE, Ohio

Recreational activities are being restricted at Wayne National Forest as oil and gas drilling proceeds and coal mining is explored at the southeastern Ohio park.

A spokesman says an order signed April 30 is intended to protect both the park’s natural resources and visitors.

The prohibitions affect campfires, off-highway vehicle operation, camping, hunting, boating and other activities.

Rules limit campers to staying 14 days within any 30-day period and prohibit mass camping involving more than eight people and three camping units at a site. New restrictions also apply to alcohol, drugs, public nudity and fireworks.

A complete list is available at the park’s website.

A public comment period is under way on proposed coal mining at the park. Shale drilling began there last year.
