Kent State prevails

KALAMAZOO, Mich.

Taylor Williams picked up his ninth win of the season in his third complete game victory as the Kent State baseball team (28-21, 15-7) took advantage of five Western Michigan’s (15-33, 7-15) errors to win 3-0.

Williams allowed only two hits in the game and struck out seven batters while walking none. He faced just three batters over the minimum.

Williams’ 91 strikeouts on the season now puts him in the Kent State record books at tenth all-time for strikeouts in a season.

Derby winner Orb gallops in New York

BALTIMORE

Kentucky Derby winner Orb galloped 11/4 miles under exercise rider Jenn Patterson at Belmont Park on Friday, and trainer Shug McGaughey said he’s “pleased with everything I’ve been seeing.”

Orb closed from 17th to win the Derby by 21/2 lengths last week, and is expected to have a final workout on Monday before being vanned to Baltimore for next Saturday’s Preakness.

The 3-year-old colt has won five in a row, and seems to be getting better with every race.

Hansen takes stage; Wiggins struggles

PESCARA, Italy

Australian rider Adam Hansen won the hilly and rainy seventh stage of the Giro d’Italia on Friday with a solo breakaway, and Benat Intxausti of Spain took the overall cycling lead.

Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins had trouble negotiating the slippery roads on a descent shortly before the finish. He fell — but didn’t appear to suffer a major injury — and lost more than a minute to the other contenders.

Hansen, who rides for Lotto Belisol, clocked more than 41/2 hours over the 109-mile leg from San Salvo to Pescara.

Rosario wins another stakes at Belmont

NEW YORK

Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Joel Rosario won another stakes at Belmont Park on Friday, guiding Miss Valentine to victory in the $90,000 No Reason.

Rosario rode Orb last weekend in the Derby and captured Belmont’s $85,000 Corma Ray Stakes on Thursday with Mine Over Matter. He was aboard the favorites in all three races.

Miss Valentine was the 6-5 choice in the race for New York bred fillies and mares. She beat Clear Pasaj by a half length, completing the mile in 1:37.53. The 5-year-old, trained by Christophe Clement, has won three races in a row, all state-bred stakes races.

Wigan aims to pull off FA Cup final shock

LONDON

The FA Cup final today features two teams apparently heading in different directions.

There’s Manchester City, confirmed for another season in the ritzy Champions League.

And Wigan, happy to forget for one day an impending fall into anonymity in the League Championship.

Wigan, three points from avoiding relegation in the English Premier League with two games to go, still believes it can stay up.

In its pursuit for survival, Wigan says the FA Cup has been a driving force, and not a distraction.

Monmouth Park starts thoroughbred season

OCEANPORT, N.J.

After undergoing millions of dollars of repairs following Hurricane Sandy, Monmouth Park will kick off its thoroughbred season today with a 12-race card and a showcase of local businesses to show the Jersey Shore is alive and kicking.

The meet will be the first at the track since the superstorm struck in late October, devastating homes and businesses along the eastern seaboard. Nine barns at the track were flooded and had to be rebuilt, with total repairs costing roughly $5.7 million.
