YOUNGSTOWN

A Youngstown man will be spending the next 12 years behind bars for pandering sexually oriented material involving juvenile girls.

Kevin Thompson, 31, of Republic Avenue, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to 10 counts of felony pandering sexually oriented matter involving minors.

The plea was entered in a deal with prosecutors Wednesday afternoon. Under the terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors recommended a 12-year sentence.

Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court accepted the recommendation and sentenced Thompson immediately.

Natasha Frenchko, an assistant county prosecutor, said there will be additional penalties levied against Thompson beyond the 12 years in prison.

She said the prosecutor’s office is pleased with the resolution.

“I believe this is a fair resolution to the case and we are pleased with the outcome,” she said.

“He will be serving a 12-year sentence and be forced to register as a sex offender for the next 25 years. He will also be on parole for five years after prison.”

Prosecutors said Thompson was using his brother’s computer to surf the Internet. When he returned the computer to his brother, the brother realized the computer had been used to search for images of minors in sexual situations.

“He had downloaded images of children, young girls 6 to 12 years old, engaged in all types of sexual activity. His brother saw it, shut the computer down and immediately went to police,” Frenchko said.

The charges levied against Thompson deal only with the Internet pictures and prosecutors do not believe there was any actual contact between Thompson and the minors in the images, but Thompson does have a past criminal history.

“He does have a past history of sexual offenses. This is the highest- level felony he has pled to, but a prior charge does involve actual contact,” said Frenchko.

According to county records, Thompson was charged with felony gross sexual imposition in 2006. He was ultimately sentenced to two years in prison for that conviction.
