Dawn Approach captures 2000 Guineas

NEWMARKET, England

Dawn Approach extended his unbeaten record by winning the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday, bringing some joy for Godolphin after its involvement in a recent doping scandal that has rocked British horse racing.

The 11-8 favorite pulled away from Toronado in the final furlong to win the first of English flat racing’s five classics by about four lengths.

It’s the third Godolphin-owned horse to win the 2,000 Guineas — a mile-long race for 3-year-olds open to colts and fillies — after Mark Of Esteem (1996) and Island Sands (1999).

Klitschko stops Pianeta in 6th to defend belts

MANNHEIM, Germany

Wladimir Klitschko stopped Francesco Pianeta in the sixth round Saturday to retain the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles.

The Ukrainian was never troubled by Pianeta, finishing off the previously unbeaten Italian southpaw with a right-left combination. Pianeta stayed down before attempting to continue, but there was no point in delaying the inevitable and referee Ernie Sharif ended the bout 2:52 into the round.

Klitschko rocked Pianeta inside the first 30 seconds, knocked him to the canvas with a straight right down the middle in the fourth, and again with a left blow in the fifth.
