HONORS

Battle Efficiency ‘E’

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Richard K. Possert Jr., son of Debra L. Martin of The Villages, Fla., and Richard K. Possert Sr. of Hubbard, and Seaman Apprentice Jonathan J. Leydic, son of Lori E. and David M. McLaren of Sharpsville, Pa., were recently awarded the Battle Efficiency “E” achievement along with other sailors attached to the guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99).

The award recognizes excellence in maritime warfare, engineering, survivability, command, control, communication and information warfare. The Farragut, homeported out of Mayport, Fla., is on a deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

Possert is a 1994 graduate of Hubbard High School, and Leydic is a 2010 graduate of Sharpsville Area High School.

PROMOTIONS

Technical sergeant

Air Force Technical Sgt. Brandon Woodruff was promoted to his present rank while assigned to the 31st Logistic Readiness Squadron at Aviano Air Base, Italy.

An inbound cargo supervisor in material management, Woodruff was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from June 2012 to November 2012. While deployed, he received Top 3 Sterling Performance and Superior Performance awards.

Woodruff, a 2001 graduate of Ursuline High School, is the son of Diane Hunter-Copeland and stepson of Ron Copeland, both of Austintown.

VETERANS

Civil-servant award

YOUNGSTOWN

Former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton recently received the AMVETS Past State Department Commanders’ Civil Servant of the Year Award for her work on behalf of veterans and her advocacy related to the development of veterans courts.

Stratton also serves in a leadership capacity at the Ohio Military and Veterans Legal Assistance Program, which connects veterans and military families to a statewide system of referrals to pro bono lawyers, bar associations, legal aid and law-school clinics.

Picnic on the Patio

CANTON

A free Women Veterans Picnic on the Patio for all women veterans throughout Northeast Ohio and their families is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9 at the 356th Fighter Group Restaurant, 4919 Mt. Pleasant St. NW, North Canton.

The event, sponsored by North Coast WAVES Unit 21 and the 356th Fighter Group, offers women veterans and their families the opportunity to share experiences, build a network of resources and learn about veterans services and veterans service organizations available to women.

There will be free food with a picnic-type menu, activities for veterans and family members and a Chinese auction that includes tickets to sporting events and other items to raise funds for the WAVES unit to help with programs that focus on caring for the needs of Ohio female veterans.

Natalie Sprouse, 2011 winner of the DeYor Singing Star Competition at Powers Auditorium in Youngstown, will entertain.
