Electrical fire forces evacuation of Southern Park Mall

Staff report

BOARDMAN

An electrical fire forced an evacuation of Southern Park Mall today.

Township firefighters said they received a call at 11:25 a.m. for a fire at a transformer located outside the mall. Capt. Brian Barber said the mall was evacuated before Ohio Edison was called to shut off power to the complex. Barber said the power to the facility had to be shut off before crews could quickly extinguish the flames.

He said power to 80 percent of the facility was cut before firefighters left the scene shortly after 1 p.m.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast news partner, workers have reported no power from Macy’s to J.C. Penny,

A worker at Dillard’s says the store lost lights but registers are still operating and the store will remain open as the problem is dealt with.

Ohio Edison reports workers are re-energizing the unit and power should return shortly.

No one was injured in the fire.
