Laurel Tech team wins gold medals

The Health Occupations Students of America Competition Team from Laurel Technical Institute has returned from their State Leadership Conference with several gold medals.

Gold medalists in their individual events are Jessica Roche of Sharon, nutrition; Megan Patton, Sharpsville, extemporaneous health education poster; Patti Wolford, Jamestown, medical reading; Candy Hummel, Hermitage, biotechnology; and Nicole Reda, Mercer, medical spelling.

Dawn Alexander of Hermitage served as HOSA delegate to the general assembly and won fourth place in medical terminology. For the second year in a row, the group’s newsletter, HOSA Happenings, was recognized as best in the state. Candy Hummel, editor, accepted the award.

All five medalists qualify to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Nashville in June.

HOSA is a national student organization of 120,000 members dedicated to promoting career opportunities in the health-care field as well as supporting education and development of health-care professionals. Student chapters are organized for high school through college levels, encompassing a variety of health-care professions.

LTI’s team competed against other students, representing colleges, universities and high schools from across Pennsylvania.

LTI’s faculty advisers for HOSA are Tracy Schliep and Paula Listopad, both of Sharon.

The achievements of the award-winning HOSA students will be celebrated in a ceremony at LTI later this spring.
