Girls track team third at county meet

Published: Fri, May 3, 2013 @ 12:00 a.m.

The Boardman girls track team placed third at the Mahoning County Championships on April 20 at Canfield High School.

The Lady Falcons from Austintown won the meet and Canfield outdistanced the Lady Spartans by 11 points to claim second place. One relay and three individuals from Boardman won County Meet honors by placing first in their events.

Senior Giovanna Silvestri was a double County winner as she took first in the shot put with a toss of 38-4 º, her second best throw of her career. Last year she was third in the event. She came back later in the day to win the discus with a personal best toss of 122-7, defending her discus County title from last year.

Junior Morgan Hambrick won the high jump with a personal best height of 5-2 after coming back from a devastating knee injury that cost her most of the season last year. The 4x800 relay team of senior Daisy Corso, juniors Brandi Gatte and Trista Cunningham and sophomore Regan O’Hara raced to first place in 10:13.92. Last year, Cunningham and O’Hara earned a County title in the same race.

The top eight places scored points for the team. Sophomore Brittany Chamberlain was the County runner-up in the pole vault with a season best vault of 7-6. Senior thrower Daisy Robinson was third in the discus, throwing 103-6 and fifth in the shot put with a toss of 35-0.

Junior Nikki Hillard was third in the long jump with a leap of 13-11 Ω. The 4x100 relay team ran 53.48 for third place and consisted of Hambrick, sophomore Hope Landers, Hillard and freshman Arianna Cuevas. Also taking third place honors was the 4x400 relay team of sophomore Alison Green, junior Jada Redd, Regan O’Hara and Brandi Gatte in a time of 4:35.37.

“Giovanna has worked very hard the past two years to be the area’s top thrower in both events.

Morgan came back from a torn ACL last year and has dedicated herself since the fall to get stronger in the weight room and is having a great year,” said coach Denise Gorski. “Daisy, Brandi, Trista and Regan have been the workhorses of the distance group these past few meets and have done a tremendous job running three and four events a meet.”
