Winds spur new wildfires near Calif. homes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A wind-driven wildfire is raging close to homes in communities 50 miles west of Los Angeles and residents are evacuating.

The Ventura County Fire Department says the blaze broke out this morning along U.S. 101 in the Camarillo area and quickly moved down slopes toward modern subdivisions. More than 100 acres have burned. There is zero containment.

More than 200 firefighters with help from aircraft dropping water and retardant worked to protect dozens of homes around the Camarillo Springs Golf Course.

Several residents have voluntarily evacuated. Fire officials said other residents should shelter in place and be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

Santa Ana winds with gusts up to 30 mph are sending up plumes of smoke over the homes and strawberry fields to the south.
