New 1-act-play festival seeks submissions

Staff report

The Youngstown Playhouse will present the 2013 Voices of the Valley New One-Act Play Festival from July 8-Aug. 4.

The festival, in its second year, brings new playwrights together with directors and actors and provides them with an opportunity to collaborate on never-produced works.

It gives new authors a chance to be heard and prepares their works for fully staged productions.

It also bridges the gap between community and regional theater. One of last year’s selected plays — “Rain Delay” by Cheryl Games — recently was produced as part of the Oakland Center for the Arts season and was a semi- finalist for the 2013 Neil LaBute Prize.

Participating writers will have a voice in the creation of a performance-ready piece as they establish a creative team to discuss, rehearse and produce a staged reading of their one-act plays.

Due to the strong response to last year’s event, the Playhouse has added a category for young writers between grades 7 and 12.

Submissions of new plays are being accepted through May 31. For instructions, go to, or visit the theater during regular business hours. There is a $10 nonrefundable submission fee, and each playwright may submit only one work. For more information, call the Playhouse at 330-788-8739.

Auditions for actors interested in performing in the plays will be June 24 and 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the theater.

The panel of writers and directors chosen to select and stage this year’s new plays consists of Carla D. Gipson, James Canacci and Bernie Appugliese. They will select three new one-acts to be rehearsed during a three-week workshop and performed at stage readings Aug. 2-4 in the Moyer Room of the Youngstown Playhouse.
