Homicide investigated

Youngstown

Police continue to investigate the city’s latest homicide.

Kristopher Stuart 26, was found dead about 10:30 p.m. Monday on the floor of a front room at his 2127 Elm St. home with a silver revolver lying near his hand.

Two other men, Dejuan Thomas, 31, of Osborne Avenue and Kalontae Carter, 22, of Norwood Avenue, also were shot and remain hospitalized.

“The detectives continue to investigate, and we’re confident we’ll be able to solve this case,” said Chief Rod Foley.

Trustees meeting

canfield

Canfield Township trustees met Wednesday at the Township Hall to discuss union negotiations.

Township Trustee Anthony Bettile opened the 1 p.m. meeting, but it immediately went into executive session until 2:30 p.m.

Contracts for three individuals of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 377 were being discussed, Trustee Marie Izzo Cartwright said. She added the three individuals in the union are public works employees and the zoning inspector.

The current contract ends later this month, but Bettile said he’s confident they’ll be able to have a new contract prepared.

Trustees Bettile, Izzo Cartwright and Stephen Maszczak refused to comment on current discussions.

They will meet again May 17.

Worker pleads guilty

WARREN

Sharon R. Vankanegan, 48, of State Street, Kinsman, has pleaded guilty to forgery and misuse of credit cards relating to her work at the Kinsman Free Library from August 2010 to January 2012.

Vankanegan entered the plea Wednesday before Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. She will be sentenced later, after the Trumbull County Adult Probation Department conducts a presentence investigation.

Vankanegan also turned over a check for $6,990 as restitution for the money lost by the library.

Hagan co-sponsors bill

COLUMBUS

State Rep. Bob Hagan of Youngstown, D-58th, has co-sponsored a bill to ban injection wells in Ohio.

At a press conference, community advocates said Ohio accepted nearly 14 million barrels of oil and gas waste for underground disposal in 179 active Class 2 injection wells last year.

The current method poses an unacceptable risk to many Ohio communities, including the potential for earthquakes, spills, and groundwater contamination with toxic and potentially radioactive waste, according to a press release from ProgressOhio.org.

“Until more-comprehensive research is conducted, Ohio does not need to be used as a dumping ground for other states’ fracking waste,” Hagan said.

“As the earthquakes in Youngstown clearly demonstrate, there are serious hazards involved in the use of injection wells. We should refrain from further endangering our communities until we have a fuller understanding of the consequences of the practice.”
