1707: The Kingdom of Great Britain is created as a treaty merging England and Scotland takes effect.

1898: Commodore George Dewey gives the command, “You may fire when you are ready, Gridley,” as an American naval force destroys a Spanish squadron in Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

1911: The song “I Want a Girl (Just Like the Girl That Married Dear Old Dad),” by Harry Von Tilzer and Will Dillon, is first published.

1931: New York’s 102-story Empire State Building is dedicated.

1941: The Orson Welles motion picture “Citizen Kane” premieres in New York.

1960: The Soviet Union shoots down an American U-2 reconnaissance plane over Sverdlovsk and captures its pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

1961: The first U.S. airline hijacking takes place as Antulio Ramirez Ortiz, a Miami electrician, commandeers a National Airlines plane that was en route to Key West, Fla., and forces the pilot to fly to Cuba.

1963: James W. Whittaker becomes the first American to conquer Mount Everest as he and Sherpa guide Nawang Gombu reach the summit.

1988: Voter enthusiasm in Mahoning and Trumbull counties for U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. appears as strong as ever, but as a congressional candidate, not as a presidential nominee. A Vindicator/YSU poll shows Traficant with 16 percent, to 31.5 for Michael Dukakis and 14.9 for Jesse Jackson.

The Park Inn, popular Mexican-food restaurant on Glenwood Avenue, has been violating state building codes for five months by operating without a fire sprinkler system or temporary occupancy permit for tis ongoing expansion. City officials have been looking the other way for at least a month.

1973: Youngstown police are seeking a 16-yearr-old Delaware Avenue youth, who witnesses say pulled a pistol and shot thee Rayen School students, an apparent continuation of a weekend feud. A 16-year-old girl is hospitalized; two others were released after treatment.

1963: A metal office wastebasket containing burned U.S. currency is found in a wooded area off Calla Road near state Route 626 and has been linked to a $10,000 safe robbery at the J.C. Penney Co. store in Rockville, Md., during the summer of 1962.

Common Pleas Judge Forrest J. Cavalier welcomes 67 men, women and children into the “fraternity” of U.S. citizenship during a Law Day swearing-in ceremony at the Mahoning County Courthouse.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Pittsburgh awards a $6.1 million construction contract for the West Branch Reservoir to Lane Construction Corp. of Meriden, Conn.

1938: Colorful Thomas T. Connally, Democratic U.S. senator from Texas, will speaker at the Hotel Ohio under the auspices of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce.

Three youngsters are killed by automobiles in a nine-hour period, including Harold Henricks, 16-year-old son of Harold H. Henricks, vice president of Youngstown Steel Door Co., who was struck wile riding his bicycle. Two younger boys struck by cars and killed were Jimmy Grazier, 7, of Youngstown, and Jackie Robinson, 5, of Mineral Ridge.
