Proposal to boost speed limits clears Ohio Senate

Published: Wed, March 20, 2013 @ 3:13 p.m.

COLUMBUS (AP) — A proposal to increase Ohio’s speed limit to 70 mph on rural interstate highways has cleared the state Senate.

Today’s 27-6 vote comes after a legislative panel worked out differences between House and Senate versions of the transportation bill.

Under the measure, Ohio’s transportation department would set the maximum speed limit for interstate freeway outerbelts in urban areas at 65 mph and on freeways in congested areas at 55 mph.

The bill also sets in motion Gov. John Kasich’s plan for a $1.5 billion Ohio Turnpike bond sale that would raise money for highway and bridge projects.

A compromise provision guarantees that 90 percent of the turnpike bond sale would go to northern Ohio projects.

The measure now heads to the House for its likely passage Thursday.

Anyone who FRETS about a 70 mph or 75 mph or higher interstate speed limit has little understanding about highway safety. Ohio's rural interstates had a fatality rate of 0.67 -- FAR FAR LOWER than the rates of 1.78 to 4.63 on most other rural roads (latest federal Highway Statistics, Table FI-30). WHY? Fatalities commonly occur at intersections, sharp curves, and where opposing traffic is separated by only yellow stripes of paint -- hazards "designed out" of interstates! Rural interstates are the fastest, safest, and most fuel-efficient highways, and carry long-distance travelers and tourists. They deserve a higher speed limit.

toycannon has it right. I have nothing against 70 mph speed limits...BUT drivers are doing 70 in 55 zones right now, so....

And give me a break on that "rural only" designation. Urban drivers drive more "wreck"lessly in the cities than they do in the country.

Just yesterday a young man parked his car in a fire zone in front of a big box hardware store and went inside. He came back out just as I was leaving, passed me at high speed on my right, zipped in front of me as I was in the left lane to make a left turn heading west, then he darted right across 3 lanes of traffic to make a right turn to head east on the same freeway. What an idiot.
