The Youngstown State women’s basketball team will entertain Indiana State on Thursday in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Game time at Beeghly Center will be 7:05 p.m.
The Penguins (22-9) have not played in a postseason tournament since making the NCAA Tournament in 1999-2000, and they will be in the WNIT for the first time in school history.
First-round games in the WNIT are scheduled Wednesday through Friday with second-round games played Saturday through Monday.
The round of 16 is scheduled March 27-29, the quarterfinals March 30-April 1 and the semifinals April 3-4.
The championship game will be played April 6 at 3 p.m. and will be telecast on CBS Sports Network.
Indiana State is 18-10 and finished tied for fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores lost their only game in the MVC Tournament, falling 71-60 to Northern Iowa.
The Penguins are coming off a disappointing 72-45 loss Friday night to Loyola in the Horizon League semifinals.
The Ramblers lost to Green Bay, 54-38, in the championship game on Sunday, clinching an NCAA Tournament berth for the top-seeded Phoenix.
That qualified YSU automatically for the 64-team WNIT as the team that finishes highest in the regular season standings and does not qualify for the NCAA.
The team and fans gathered Monday night at Cassese’s MVR to find out the Penguins’ opponent.
The tournament first-round pairings were announced late Monday on www.womensnit.com.
Tickets for the game will go on sale today at 10 a.m. at the Athletics Ticket Office in Stambaugh Stadium.
Reserved tickets will be $10, and general admission tickets will be $7. YSU students will be admitted for free with a valid and current ID.
Season ticket holders will have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday to purchase tickets before their seats are released.
