Police investigate fatal crash

Staff report

The identity hasn’t been released of a driver killed in a crash on U.S. Route 224 Monday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield Post is investigating the crash that occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m., just west of Knauf Road.

A pickup driven by Jeffrey Huss of Sugar Creek, Ohio, was traveling east on Route 224 when a Nissan Xterra, traveling west, lost control on the ice and slush, going left on center into Huss’s path where the two collided.

Both vehicles went off the roadway into a ditch, catching fire with the Nissan fully engulfed.

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office pronounced the driver of the Nissan dead at the scene.

Ice and slush covered Mahoning Valley roadways Monday morning as a mix of snow, rain and freezing rain started falling about 7 a.m.

Some schools in Columbiana County were under a two-hour delay and the area was under a winter weather advisory for much of the day.
