Northeast Ohio woman charged with embezzling

CLEVELAND

A suburban Cleveland woman has been charged with embezzling more than $650,000 in federal funds while working for a subsidized housing community for older residents.

The criminal count against 51-year-old Theresa E. Medsker, of Willoughby Hills, was announced Friday by U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach in Cleveland.

The Justice Department alleges Medsker took the money between December 2005 and January 2012 while working as a bookkeeper for the Schnurmann House in Mayfield Heights.

Prosecutors allege Medsker deposited around 300 Schnurmann House checks into her personal account over that time, fraudulently altering some and forging signatures on others.

Schnurmann House is a nonprofit, inter-denominational housing community that provides 198 apartments for individuals 62 and older. It receives much of its money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

It would appear that no one, private or governmental, was auditing this group so it just becomes another case of our tax dollars being flushed down the drain. Perhaps all of the needed auditors are busy preparing for Obamacare 2014.
