Parents may learn more about Hathorn's new schools plan

Staff report

Youngstown City Schools Superintendent Connie Hathorn is planning a series of parent and community meetings regarding his schools’ revitalization plan, building closures and the expanded program options available to families throughout the next school year.

The first series of meetings will be with families of students who attend buildings that will close at the end of the school year. Families are welcome to attend any of the following meetings:

Kirkmere at 6 p.m. Monday.

P. Ross Berry at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Wilson at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Volney Rogers, at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Families will hear about program choices for students in grades three through 12, including the new Discovery Program at Kirkmere and the seventh- and eighth-grade College/Career Prep program at East and Chaney.

The deadline also will be extended for families who want to apply to the Chaney specialty programs — visual and performing arts; the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; and Rayen Early College Middle School. Applications will be available at these meetings.

Program information and applications also are available online at or by calling the Student Services office at 330-744-6970. The specialty-program application deadline is April 19.

District and community leaders also are planning a series of communitywide meetings for families throughout the Youngstown area.
