Woman pleads in death of baby in motel

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania woman has pleaded guilty in the death of her 5-month-old son in a motel room a year ago.

The Erie Times-News says 23-year-old Leslie Holmes pleaded guilty Monday in Erie County Court to involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities say Jasper Holmes was found unresponsive in February 2012 in the Riviera Motel in Millcreek Township. He died 11 days later of traumatic brain injuries.

In return for the plea, prosecutors dropped murder, assault and other charges.

Defense attorney John Moore said that although his client acknowledged shaking the child, there was no evidence that she did so in anger rather than to try to get him to start breathing again. He said the investigation didn’t determine why the child stopped breathing.
