Canfield High School was represented by three band members who performed as part of the closing concert of the Ohio Music Education Association’s (OMEA) annual Professional Development Conference from Feb. 7-9 in Columbus.
The 2013 OMEA All-State Band was under the direction of guest conductor, Craig Kirchhoff, director of bands and instrumental conducting at the University of Minnesota.
Canfield band members selected are two-time participant senior Michael Barkett (trumpet), senior Hayley Ward (alto saxophone) and junior Emily Damelio (oboe), who earned the high honor of principal chair oboe. Barkett also performed with the internationally-acclaimed Cleveland Youth Orchestra during the conference.
One of the highlights that focuses on student performance are the OMEA All-State Ensembles for band, choir, jazz band and orchestra. More than 1,000 high students from all across Ohio submitted applications and recorded auditions in May 2012 in hopes of being selected to perform with these prestigious ensembles.
Barkett, senior trumpet player, is the son of Father James and Elyse Barkett. This is his second year being selected to the OMEA All-State Band (2012 and 2013). He has studied trumpet for eight years.
He is a member of the Canfield High School Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and Crimson Brass Quintet, as well as, President of Student Council. Barkett has performed in numerous honor ensembles, including the OMEA District 5 Honors Band (2011 and 2012), the Ohio State Honors Band (2011) and the Ohio Band Directors Conference Honors Band (2011). Upon graduation, he will be majoring in Music Performance the Dana School of Music at YSU with a pre-law minor.
Ward, senior alto saxophone player, is the daughter of Bob and Laura Ward. She has studied saxophone for eight years and piano for 12 years. Hayley is a member of the Canfield High School Symphonic Band and Chamber Choir. For 12 years, she has received unanimous Superior ratings at the Ohio Federation of Music Club’s competition and this March she will receive the President’s Gold Cup.
She has also received the Paderewski award for excellence from the National Piano Guild and will be awarded the National Guild High School Diploma in May. She has also won the Youngstown Music Teachers’ Association’s Masters Competition for 10 years.
She has received Superior ratings at OMEA Solo and Ensemble competitions. Ward was a member of the Ohio State University Honor Band in 2011 and District 5 Honor Band in 2012. Upon graduation, she plans on majoring in music.
Damelio, junior oboe player, is the daughter of Charles and Kathleen Damelio. She has studied oboe for six years. She is a member of the Canfield High School Symphonic Band, Chamber Choir and Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has consistently earned Superior ratings at OMEA Solo and Ensemble competitions. She has been selected to perform with numerous honors ensembles including the Ohio State Honors Band (2012 and 2013), the Ohio Band Directors Conference Honors Band (2011), and the OMEA District 5 Honors Band (2012).
For the 2013 OMEA All-State Band, Damelio earned Principal Chair oboe. She plans on majoring music when she graduates from Canfield in 2014.
