Cellphone tower near Phila. catches fire
An emergency- management official says a 75-foot cellphone tower is leaning after it caught fire in suburban Philadelphia, but the blaze is mostly extinguished.
Firefighters in Bensalem reported the tower was on fire about 11:30 a.m. Friday. Television footage of the blaze showed clouds of smoke rising up from the structure.
Bucks County’s director of emergency services, Scott Forster says the fire mostly was extinguished shortly after noon. But Forster says a small area still is smoldering at the base of the tower. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Forster says some residents nearby have been evacuated. He says the tower is leaning, but he’s not sure how badly it’s damaged or whether it’s structurally sound. A Peco spokesman says power to the tower has been cut off.
