Claudio Bautista had four hits and four RBIs as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers crushed the Batavia Muckdogs, 14-2, on Thursday night in New York-Penn League action.
The Scrappers (2-2) blew open a tight game with an eight-run fifth inning. Seven of the runs — all earned — came off reliever Patrick Merkling, who allowed three hits, walked four and did not retire a batter.
Claudio Bautista doubled, singled and drove in two runs in the inning. Nick Hamilton also had a two-run single in the inning.
Bautista finished with four hits and four RBIs, Robel Garcia had three hits and two RBIs and Juan Herrerra, Hamilton and Juan Romero each had two hits.
But the news was not all good as Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Michael Goodnight worked just 22/3 innings before leaving with a shoulder injury.
Reliever James Stokes (1-0) pitched 11/3 innings for the victory.
