2 charged with OVI after 588 vehicles pass through Austintown checkpoint

Two drivers were charged with operating a vehicle under the influence resulting from a checkpoint Saturday night and early Sunday.

The Mahoning Valley OVI Task Force conducted the checkpoint on Mahoning Avenue at Howard Avenue. A total of 588 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint. In addition to the two OVI arrests, there was one summons for driving under suspension, two citations for drug abuse, one for possession of drug paraphernalia, one for open container and an arrest on a felony warrant.

Yes, because one of those two would have gone left of center and killed somebody.

The whole thing is a joke. Waste of time and money. I can understand putting extra patrols out to watch for impaired drivers, but pulling people over randomly is ridiculous.

Another shot at the craps table by local law enforcement.

A lot of inconvenienced motorists for an infinitesimal chance of hitting the big time, er, bust.

Big D,
OVI task force is made up from members of local PD's on extra duty. It is paid by a state grant, not overtime from regular payroll. It is not conducted by 'on shift' officers. But hey, don't let not knowing facts stop you from posting.

"Federal Grant Funds" = Taxes. Plain and simple.

And really, 4th Amendment rights? Forget about it.

Complete waste of time. This is more of a 'you look suspicious, let's see your papers' event than an OVI Checkpoint. There are statistically more people arrested at these for things other than OVI.
