Cortland restaurant owner sentenced in worker’s comp fraud

Staff report

Deanna L. Pizzurro, 47, one of the two owners of Brothers Pizza, 144 S. High St., Cortland, has been ordered to pay a $100 fine for committing workers’ compensation fraud.

Pizzurro received her sentence Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. A county grand jury indicted her in February on a felony workers’ compensation fraud charge.

She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor workers’ compensation fraud in May and agreed to pay half the $6,000 in workers’ compensation payments that were not made at the restaurant.

Prosecutors say Pizzurro and her husband, Angelo, 54, individually and as owners of the restaurant, failed to secure or maintain workers’ compensation coverage as required by Ohio law from January 2007 through June 2012. The value of the premiums and assessments not paid is about $6,000.

Angelo Pizzurro pleaded guilty to the same charge and will be sentenced Monday.
