Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer will be the keynote speaker for Monday’s United Way “Champions Among Us” dinner at the Covelli Centre.
Meyer, who won two national championships with the University of Florida, guided the Buckeyes to a 12-0 record in his first season in Columbus.
“I look forward to coming to Youngstown and talking to the passionate football fans of the Mahoning Valley,” Meyer said. “This is a huge recruiting base for us, and I know all about the tradition and great high school football played in the Mahoning Valley.
“Also, I look forward to supporting such a great organization like United Way which helps so many in need.”
Also speaking will be Boardman High graduate John Greco, a offensive lineman with the Cleveland Browns.
During the dinner, the United Way will honor three college athletes: Kurt Hess, Youngstown State quarterback; Kent State defensive back Luke Wollet, a Poland High graduate; and University of Pittsburgh soccer player Ashley Cuba, a Cardinal Mooney graduate.
Sarah Turner, the 20-year-old country singer from Boardman, will perform.
Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for a silent auction and cash bar. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m.
Champions Among Us is the United Way’s largest fund-raiser of the year. Table sponsorship opportunities are available for $800 and include reserved seating for eight. Individual tickets are available for $100 each.
