The Boardman girls track team finished in third place at the Northeast District Track and Field Championships at Austintown Fitch High School May 24.
The top four places in each event qualified to the regional meet. Five events and four girls qualified from the Lady Spartans team, including four field events and one running event. Senior Giovanna Silvestri was the district champion in the shot put throwing 39’8.25” and secured the district runner-up spot in the discus with a throw of 123’. She will advance to the regional meet for the third year in a row.
Junior Morgan Hambrick tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 5’2” and has qualified to the regional meet along with senior Sarina Mauerman, who placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 9’6”. Both girls are qualifying to the regional meet for the second year in a row.
Junior Jada Redd has qualified for her first regional meet appearance in the 400-meter dash. She placed fourth, running a time of 62.53 seconds. This is Jada’s first year of running track.
Junior Trista Cunningham ran a career best time of 5:37.52 in the 1600-meter, while freshman Sydney Lewis had a personal best of 4’10” in the high jump.
“This is always a meet of extreme highs and lows,” said head coach Denise Gorski. “You are elated for those who have made it on to the regional meeet but feel badly for those girls who don’t because their season is done. The underclassman have another chance but many of them were emotional about their season coming to a close which shows their competitiveness and desire to excel even more next year.”
