Cano, Wright named captains for HR Derby

NEW YORK

David Wright and Robinson Cano are going to give the Home Run Derby a New York feel. Wright, the third baseman for the New York Mets, this year’s host for the All-Star game, has been named captain of the National League team. Cano, the crosstown rival Yankees second baseman, will lead the AL squad for the second straight year.

The derby will be July 15 at Citi Field as part of All-Star weekend festivities in New York City.

Wright and Cano will choose three teammates each.

Price takes next step with simulated game

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

AL Cy Young Award winner David Price is scheduled to throw his first simulated game Thursday since being sidelined last month by a strained left triceps.

The Tampa Bay left-hander, put on the disabled list for the first time in his career May 16, could rejoin the rotation by late June or early July.

Price was first scheduled to throw the simulated game Saturday, but Rays manager Joe Maddon said the pitcher threw so well in his second bullpen session Monday that the timeline was moved up. Price is 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA after going 20-5 with a 2.56 ERA in 2012.

NCAA APR to keep 18 teams from postseason

Eighteen Division I teams will miss the postseason because of poor NCAA Academic Progress Reports released Tuesday. The squads losing postseason eligibility consist of six men’s basketball teams; three football teams; two squads each in baseball, women’s volleyball and men’s indoor and outdoor track; and the New Orleans women’s basketball team.

The teams with postseason bans in the 2013-14 academic year come from 10 schools: Alabama State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Florida A&M, Florida International, Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State, New Orleans, Norfolk State, Savannah State and Southern. The 18 ineligible teams compares to 15 teams ineligible for the 2012-13 postseason.

The overall four-year APR score across Division I was 974, a one-point increase from last year.

US makes 2 changes in lineup vs. Panama

SEATTLE

U.S. soccer coach Jurgen Klinsmann made two changes to his lineup Tuesday night for the Americans’ World Cup qualifier against Panama, inserting Eddie Johnson and Geoff Cameron into the starting lineup.

The changes were necessitated by a concussion suffered by Jermaine Jones against Jamaica and a yellow card suspension to Graham Zusi and changed the U.S. to a 4-2-3-1 allignment.

Tim Howard started in goal with the defensive back four the same as the previous two matches: Brad Evans at right back, Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler in central defense and DaMarcus Beasley at left back. The midfield included Cameron, Johnson, Michael Bradley, captain Clint Dempsey and Fabian Johnson.

Jozy Altidore was the lone striker for the Americans and scored in the 36th minute. Eddie Johnson added a goal in the 53rd minute for a 2-0 advantage. In CONCACAF qualifying full-time results Tuesday, Honduras defeated Jamaica, 2-0, and Mexico and Costa Rica played to a 0-0 draw.
