Anthony J. Velasquez of Canfield is the 2013 recipient of the 15th annual Mahoning Valley Professional Baseball Association – Scrappers Backers Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship will be presented at the Meet the Players and Scholarship Awards Picnic June 15.
Each school in the greater Mahoning Valley submitted the name of one baseball player with exemplary community service, grades and baseball achievements. Velasquez was chosen out of more than 120 applicants for the scholarship.
Velasquez, a left-handed pitcher from Canfield High School, is a first team selection for the All American Conference and a two year letterman for the Cards. He was selected to participate in the first annual High School Valley All–Star Classic, hosted by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field on June 7.
He is very dedicated to community service and was the 2012 recipient of an Eagle of Cross award from the Bishop of Youngstown for his exemplary service work in the Diocese of Youngstown. He has volunteered at Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Howland, the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley, the Canfield Baseball Club and St. Michael Parish of Canfield.
Velasquez will attend Elon University in North Carolina in the fall and plans to major in elementary education/special education, with a goal of becoming the superintendent of a school for children with special needs. He is the son of Kevin and Sharon Roncone Velasquez.
