Teams from three Mahoning Valley schools placed in the Destination Imagination Global Finals last month in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Helping Hands, a team from Summit Academy in Youngstown, tied for 20th out of 39 teams in their category in the competition’s service-learning contest.

The Mainstream Hipsters from Niles McKinley High School tied for 21st of 51 teams in their event in the improvisational competition and the DI Dream Team from Howland Local Schools placed 23 out of 51 teams entered in their category in the structural portion of the competition.

Competing teams came from 45 states, seven Canadian provinces and 13 countries.

Each of the teams advanced from regional Destination Imagination competition to get to the global event.

In the service-learning category, teams identify community need, solve it and make a documentary showing the effort.

In the improvisational area, teams had to create and perform a five-minute skit about a dramatic change in the world and in the structural contest, teams build a structure that must hold weight.
